Predator-Proof Bomas

The construction of robust and predator-proof enclosures, known as “bomas,” is a cornerstone of conflict mitigation. These enclosures, designed to withstand predator attacks, are built around livestock holding areas and homesteads, creating a safe haven for animals and people. They will be constructed using a combination of traditional techniques, such as the use of “enkang” (thorn hedges), and modern materials like metal mesh, reinforced poles, and predator deterrent lights.

Community Training and Material Support

To ensure successful implementation, comprehensive training programs for community members will be conducted. These sessions will cover the construction and maintenance of predator-proof fences, emphasizing traditional knowledge alongside modern techniques. The program will also provide essential materials, such as metal mesh and reinforced poles, to facilitate the construction of these enclosures.

Impact

The impact of this strategy is expected to be significant, resulting in reduced livestock losses due to predator attacks, increased safety for community members, and the preservation of valuable traditional knowledge while integrating modern technology. The implementation of predator-proof enclosures represents a critical step towards ensuring the safety and well-being of both people and wildlife.
